Renewal for the Whole Family

As the “Spring Cleaning” itch takes hold and you begin deep-cleaning the pantry and clearing out the garage, it’s the perfect time to turn that attention toward your pet’s belongings. Winter is incredibly harsh on pet gear; salt, ice, and freezing temperatures can degrade materials in ways that aren’t always visible at a glance. Before we head into the high-activity months of April and May, it’s time for a “Pet Safety Audit.”

The Professional 4-Point Inspection Checklist:

The Leash & Collar Stress Test:

Inspect all nylon and leather for fraying, “thin” spots, or teeth marks. Pay close attention to the metal clips and D-rings; winter salt can cause “pitting” or corrosion that makes metal brittle. If a leash snaps on a busy Mansfield street, it’s too late. If it looks worn, spring for an upgrade!

The Toy Triage:

Go through the toy box with a critical eye. If a plush toy is missing its stuffing, it’s a choking hazard. If a rubber toy has cracks or missing chunks, it can harbor harmful bacteria or break off into sharp pieces. When in doubt, toss it out and replace it with something fresh.

The Bedding Deep-Clean:

Pet beds are magnets for winter allergens, dander, and “outdoor funk.” We recommend a high-heat wash to kill any lingering dust mites or bacteria. If the bed is flattened or the foam is crumbling, it’s time to invest in a new one to support your pet’s joints.

The Medical Cabinet:

Check the expiration dates on heartworm, flea, and tick preventatives. As the ground warms up, pests become active immediately. Ensure your “emergency kit” is stocked with fresh gauze, antiseptic wipes, and a copy of your pet’s vaccination records for your upcoming spring travel.
