August heat can be intense — and our pets feel it even more than we do. While we may love the sunshine, high temperatures can be dangerous for dogs and cats if we’re not careful. The good news? A few simple precautions can go a long way in keeping your furry friend safe, cool, and happy.

Here are our top summer safety tips from the team at Best In Class Pet Sitting:

1. Watch the Pavement

If it’s too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws. Asphalt and sidewalks can burn quickly, especially during mid-day walks. Stick to grassy areas and aim for early morning or evening strolls when the ground is cooler.

2. Never Leave Pets in the Car

Even with the windows cracked, a car can turn deadly in minutes. Temperatures rise fast and can cause heatstroke — even on days that don’t seem “that hot.” It’s never worth the risk.

3. Provide Plenty of Water

Keep water bowls full and refreshed throughout the day, especially if your pet is spending time outside. For a fun twist, try frozen treats like pet-safe popsicles or ice cubes with chicken broth.

4. Limit Exercise in the Heat

Overexertion can be dangerous. On especially hot days, cut back on intense play or long walks. Dogs with short snouts (like pugs and bulldogs) are particularly sensitive to heat and should be watched closely.

5. Offer Shade & Cool Spaces

If your pet is outdoors, make sure they have a shady place to rest. Indoors, keep fans or A/C running when possible. Cooling mats and raised beds can also make nap time more comfortable.

6. Know the Signs of Heatstroke

Excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or uncoordinated movements can be signs your pet is overheating. If you notice any of these, move them to a cool area and contact your vet immediately.
